Amtrak Advances Major Upgrades and Repairs at Historic Lancaster Station

LANCASTER, Pa. – Amtrak is making significant progress on a series of critical improvements and repairs at the historic Lancaster Station (LNC), aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and the overall customer experience. These vital upgrades are being carried out in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

The project encompasses a range of key enhancements designed to bring the station to a state of good repair while preserving its iconic character. According to Dr. David Handera, Amtrak Vice President, Accessibility, Stations and Facilities, Amtrak is undertaking several vital construction projects to modernize this important Lancaster landmark.

Major elements of the station improvements include:

  • Replacement of existing platforms and their foundations.
  • Rehabilitation of platform canopies.
  • Insulation of the pedestrian overpass.
  • Resurfacing of floors within the station.
  • Replacement of windows with historically accurate designs.
  • Rehabilitation of the historic baggage lift enclosure.
  • Repair of station windows and replacement of door closers.
  • Replacement of HVAC mechanical equipment.

Significant progress has already been made, with the reconstruction of the south platform completed and returned to service in November 2024. Work is currently focused on the north platform, involving the demolition of the existing structure and installation of new foundations. The new north platform is expected to be back in service by January 2026. All state of good repair work on the existing pedestrian overpass and the station building is anticipated to be finished by March 2026.

Amtrak’s efforts are being coordinated with PennDOT’s ongoing project to extend the pedestrian bridge, which will provide access to a new parking lot on the north side of the station. This related project is slated for completion in fall 2026.

In addition to the public areas, renovations are also underway at the Amtrak Police Department facilities located at Lancaster Station. This work is part of Amtrak’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for both travelers and employees. The police facility upgrades include an improved processing area, enhanced evidence storage, a new canine room, and a refurbished historic storefront utilizing salvaged materials. This renovation is expected to be completed by summer 2025.

The Lancaster Station is a vital transportation hub, ranking as the second busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania and the 25th busiest in the United States. In FY24, the station served 464,190 riders, representing a 22% increase from the previous year.

Officials have lauded the investment in the station. Senator John Fetterman commented that the investment is “great news for Southeast Pennsylvania,” emphasizing that updated and accessible transportation infrastructure benefits everyone. He also acknowledged Amtrak’s prioritization of the historic station’s revitalization as the second busiest in the state. Senator Scott Martin highlighted that these improvements build upon previous progress in creating a safe and thriving passenger rail network and expressed anticipation for the platforms to be fully operational soon. Senator Marty Flynn echoed these sentiments, praising the collaborative effort between Amtrak and PennDOT to enhance accessibility, safety, preserve historic character, and improve the overall passenger experience. Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace welcomed the visible progress, stating that the station is a crucial part of the community and the renovations will make it more welcoming for all travelers.

These improvements are part of Amtrak’s broader initiatives to modernize rail infrastructure, support regional economic growth, and ensure that public transit remains a reliable and inclusive option for communities across Pennsylvania. Amtrak is focused on transforming rail travel by modernizing and expanding its infrastructure to meet growing demand.
